Better info, better health

The UK has a new health information strategy which aims to provide all patients and staff with high quality information, in appropriate formats, whereever and whenever they need it. Dave Thompson looks at what is promised and how it will be achieved.

December 2004 saw the launch of the Department of Health's Information for Choice strategy 'Better information, Better choices, Better health'. The strategy stems from the DoH Choice agenda set out in the 'Choosing Health' white paper, published in November 2004. It also builds on the commitments which emerged from the 2003 from the 'Choice, Responsiveness and Equity' consultation. Nearly 90% of respondents said that to make informed choices about their health and healthcare they needed the right (impartial, high quality) information at the right time with the support they need to use it.
