When Disaster StrikesRecently the UK has seen a succession of emergencies - petrol shortages, foot and mouth disease, flooding and the aftermath of rail disasters. At such times access to accurate information is crucial for both the public and for the coping agencies. Widespread access to the web and mobile phones has greatly raised expectations of what should be delivered - putting further pressure on the authorities to 'get it right'. Julian Williams looks at how local authorities are facing up to the challenge. The first thing people
require during and after an emergency incident is accurate information-
what, where, when, and - later - how? They will also want information
about relatives and friends who may be involved. Agencies responsible
for putting this information into the public domain will be under enormous
pressure to ensure that the information they share amongst each other,
and subsequently disseminate, is accurate. |
