Search for success

Surrey County Council’s website – www.surreycc.gov.uk - won 'best local authority website in England' award in this year's SPIN/SOCITM awards. Surrey's site was judged to provide the 'best overall user experience'. One of Surrey’s Web Content Co-ordinators, Elaine Saunders, explains how.

We were delighted to win this award. The competition has been getting stronger and stronger every year and we were up against some very good sites. The judges were particularly impressed with our A-Z and search facilities and I would like to tell you a bit about how we developed these particular functions on our site.
Although our website was in the SOCITM top twenty in 2001, it did have limitations - 150 databases and no coherent structure, which was very confusing for users - and it didn’t meet government guidelines. Interestingly since 1998 we had adopted a devolved content authoring approach, which was quite popular.
