Shared tenant services

Current trends suggesting a widening digital divide and the search is on for ways to bridge the gap. Shared tenant services offer one solution - individuals cooperate, everyone benefits, and social inclusion gets a helping hand. Stuart Cowie looks at how this might work.

Where are we today?
Inside most houses technology is accumulating at quite rapid speed – no longer is there just one television in the living room, just one telephone at the bottom of the stairs. Volume promotions and falling prices have changed our view of consumer electronics significantly – who’d have predicted ten years ago that we’d be able to buy DVD players from the supermarket for just £29.99? Mobile phones, cordless digital phones and other wireless developments have also altered views – no longer are ‘systems’ or ‘networks’ in the home just visions for the future. Certainly, there are plenty of people in the media talking of high-end customised installations, but a glance at B&Q’s computer and network accessories tells you just how ‘DIY’ this has actually become for many.
