Managing Public Sector Information

UK public sector bodies are in danger of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information they are required to collect, store and organise. FOI will add to this challenge. Kable's September conference took a comprehensive look at the range of issues we now face. Cynthia Keane reports.

Establishing an information management framework and its associated operational activities within a local authority is not an easy task. The whole process is surrounded with several problems and pressures. In today’s environment, local authorities need to collect a vast quantity of information. This information has to be organised in such a way that it is easily accessible by the various users, in varying formats at various times. The public and indeed all parties involved demand transparency and accountability. Regulation compliance, central government deadlines and local authority targets all have to be met. To establish a framework, which incorporates all of these issues, is therefore a major task. It involves the whole of the enterprise and requires an enterprise information architecture and associated strategy.
