SPiN –
The Society of Public Information Networks – has attracted members
from local authorities, government organisations, and the voluntary and
health sectors in the past.
All are involved in communicating
with the public using internet, kiosks, DiTV, telephony etc. Information
management is a key element of SPiN’s work – with our areas
of interest ranging from accessibility to usability and from data sharing
to content management.
At the Extraordinary General
Meeting on the 10 December 2007, it was agreed that SPiN membership will
cease to exist after 1st April 2008. SPiN is a membership organisation,
and relies for its momentum on the active support of members. Unfortunately,
member involvement in recent years has declined, as has the number of
Board members, to a level where the organisation is no longer sustainable.
There is much goodwill towards SPiN in the Public Information community,
and a number of people have given careful consideration to joining the
Board, but it seems that work pressures are so great nowadays that individuals
are unable to commit the time necessary.
The Board have thought
long and hard about the best way to wind down SPiN and what alternatives
would be available to our members. We have a long history of working closely
with Socitm www.soctim.gov.uk
in areas such as ‘Better Connected’, publications, conferences
and awards, so we hope you will give serious consideration to the various
membership options which they offer. The recently formed Public Sector
Website Managers Group (www.pswmg.org.uk)
will also take up many of the issues which SPiN has traditionally been
involved with – if you haven’t already joined, do take a look.
We would like to thank all
the people who have been involved with SPiN.
We have decided to
keep available limited information on the website until June 2008 after
this date it will be removed.
